President’s Letter for May 2012

Why not you?

Collaboration was one of the goals of several chapter leaders in the Midwest who met at the 2010 ICF conference. All of the words that are listed as synonyms for collaboration: teamwork, partnership, group effort, alliance, relationship, cooperation are also what we had in mind. Based on these ideas, the Midwest Chapter Leaders Forum  (MCLF) was created in December of 2010 to see what could happen if we honored a commitment to those ideas.  We have met on a monthly basis since then.   Read more about the MCLF here. http://icf-midwestregionalconference.com/?page_id=448

From this initial group of leaders, an idea to bring a quality event in the form of a regional conference for all coaches began to take shape. Our basic idea was that this conference would honor collaboration, connection and celebration—something that we had already experienced by creating and being part of the MCLF.  The annual Midwest Regional Conference (MRC) is the result of that vision. We are collaborating and creating. There are committee teams composed of coaches from several states, most of whom I have never met except by phone. Read more about the MRC here. http://icf-midwestregionalconference.com/?page_id=450   It has been an incredible experience for me—and I would never have had the opportunity if I hadn’t volunteered to be on the MCA board .

This is a rather long introduction to asking you—yes, you–to consider MCA board service.  Nominations are currently open for several positions , and the form is pretty easy to fill out.  Log-in and go to: http://minnesotacoaches.org/member-learning-area/

I don’t have a top ten list of reasons why you might want to become part of MCA’s leadership team—and you probably are experiencing a lot of resistance to the idea of serving on the board. I do know my top reasons for encouraging you to do so is based on my own experience:

  • expansion of who and what I know
  • learning, learning, learning
  •  connection and collaboration with a larger community
  •  exposure to many different chapter practices
  •  opportunity to make a difference in many ways (just ask me)
  •  working and learning from smart, talented MCA board members
  •  deepening of my commitment to the profession of coaching

Maybe you aren’t ready to commit to board service yet—but maybe you are ready to join one of our committees to help make MCA an even better organization.  Don’t say “Why me?” Say “Why not me?” Don’t think “I don’t have time.”  Think “I’ll make time—this is important.”  Volunteering, like coaching itself, gets you more in return than you give.

Thanks for reading—I hope to see you at a board meeting in 2013!

To your best and biggest self,

Karen Karsten

PS: The Midwest Regional Conference is coming to Minneapolis in June of 2013—and yes, we will be looking for volunteers for that, too!

Dan Hyers- SagePresence            MCA May Monthly Meeting- The Presence of Coaching

New material will deepen your learning in this session!!

As coaches, we all want to be listened to, respected, and understood. Unfortunately, that want can often get in the way of these things actually happening.

In this powerful session, the filmmakers of SagePresence will share their expertise in helping coaches project the kind of presence that inspires the kind of response that we all want and need in our coaching relationships.

This presentation will parallel this style of coaching by engaging you in a discussion about what can get in your way around getting the kind of response that you want from prospects and clients when you attempt to engage them in meaningful dialogue.

Then you will get a clear sense about what exactly it is you want from your prospects and clients-focused listening and a commitment to take action.

The rest of the session will be a systematic process giving you the tools to forge a connection with people without saying a word, focusing their attention, and filling it with a combination of warmth, positivity, and driving emotion that others can often be irresistible.

Then you will hear how to sustain this connection through a dialogue that maximizes value experienced by everyone in the conversation, revealing a simple structure that is irresistibly focused on the other person and leads them where they want to go.

Dean Hyers and Pete Machalek are co-founders of SagePresence, a consortium of filmmakers who came together to offer their expertise in message and performance to professionals and organizations. Dean and Pete have been shaping presence with clients since 1999. Pete has a Masters Degree in Communication.Since 2001, they have delivered presentations, workshops and individual coaching sessions to help their clients generate confident and influential “stage presence” to win their audiences over, everywhere from the networking floor to the presenter’s stage. Use of Intuition in Coaching … and an Invitation

By Lyndra Hearn Antonson, CPCC, MSW

Lyndra Antonson MCA Membership Co-LeadI was in my second coaching call – after the Discovery session – with a new life coaching client. The call started with the client sounding very defeated and pessimistic about the possibility for change in his life. I felt like I was working too hard. I began silently questioning whether or not he was a good candidate for coaching. As he spoke of feeling so stuck in impossibility, an image came to mind.

Using my training through the Coaches Training Institute (CTI), I “blurted” my intuition. I told him I had an image of him being in quicksand and just barely able to keep his head from going under.

What happened next startled me. He began talking about successes he’s had in life and obstacles he’s overcome. He spoke of applying the tools that had worked in one area of his life to the areas he’s still challenged by. I found myself confused by what had just happened in our session.

So I asked him – how did we get to where we are now from where we were at the beginning of the call? He said he hadn’t liked the image I shared of being stuck in quicksand.

Emotional Wisdom: How I claimed my “disowned emotions”

By Irene M. Kelly, Leadership, Life & Academic Coach

Talk about experiencing the gamut of emotions … I did last month.  I am ever so grateful to Pam Nichols who encouraged me and Denny Stockdale who invited me to offer the program for the March MCA meeting.  Thank you both for providing me a “stretch” opportunity!  And now for the emotional gamut …

I’ve made many presentations over the years; I enjoy the preparation and the “nervousness” that fuels excitement.  I must say once I committed to make the MCA presentation, I became stuck!  Fortunately, my Wisdom Group (WG) coaches supported me to create and develop the presentation.  Good thing because creativity was dormant!

One of my WG coaches assured me that I had all I needed to share important material about the emotional wisdom and how easily images support eliciting the wisdom; I could not seem to muster up what I knew.  It was when she asked me “what was in the way”?  that I recognized the block … EMOTIONS … anxiety, doubt, fear.  Each time I attempted to create, agitation set in!

Her support (how I value coaching) and my subsequent reflection, “unstuck” me!  Once I owned my emotions, acknowledged how they supported me and accepted their value, the barrier disappeared, pathways opened, creativity flowed… voila … a Prezi!

April Update & May Meeting for Business Building Coaching Circle

Submitted by Anne Olson, President-Elect

Sorry to miss you at the April 17 meeting of the Business Building Coaching Circle. We had a good suggestion from one of our members to limit the timeframe on coupons for services. This gives a sense of urgency to the coupon plus limiting your commitment for offering the discount. Also, another member gave an update on her history with using Community Education as a resource for finding clients and other opportunities within the community to provide coaching. It has taken two years but the investment is now starting to pay off in that people and organizations are coming to her, rather than her seeking them.

Our next meeting will be the third Tuesday of May:

When: Tuesday, May 15, 2012
Time: 7:00-8:00 pm (CDT)
How to participate: 1-218-486-1600; code: 723095#

Hope to hear from more of you in May.
