President’s Letter for February, 2012

International Coaching Week is February 5-11!

International Coaching Week (ICW) is a weeklong global celebration of the coaching profession. This event has been held during the first full week in February since 1999. The intention is to designate a week each year in which coaches all over the world can both celebrate and publicize coaching. There are lots of ways to help promote the coaching profession. How are you planning to celebrate? Hint: How about volunteering for next year’s Board of Directors or as a team member now?

MCA is celebrating ICW by launching the MAP and Minnesota Coaches Association Partnership: Executive Coaching for Nonprofit Leaders during ICW. This is a 12-month pilot partnership between MCA and MAP, where nonprofit leaders will be able to interview, select and work with a coach for three months or six hours of coaching at a reduced cost. It is a way for coaches to give back to the community and also be in the community—two items that come up often in conversations with MCA members.

Applications to participate in this program will be available on the MCA website in the near future. Coaches must have completed advanced training (60 hours of coach specific training) and have executive coaching experience to be considered for the program.

Celebrate coaching—what made you decide to be a coach?

Cheers,

Karen Karsten 2012 MCA President

Let’s Talk! Organize a Coaching Community Circle

To build community and collaboration among coaches, MCA invites its members to participate in our Coaching Community Circles (“Circle”). Both MCA members and non-members are welcome to join the dialogue and sharing around topics relevant to the coaching profession. The Circles create opportunities for participants to go beyond the MCA Tele-classes and Monthly Meetings for additional learning and community development.  They provide coaches a way to connect informally and in small groups for greater networking and deeper conversation.  The Circles are organized by MCA members and sponsored by the MCA with mentorship from its Board of Directors.

The Lifecycle of a Circle

A Circle begins when an MCA member or members has a topic for conversation they are willing to organize.  A topic could be exploring  a coaching niche, such as health & wellness, or about an aspect of coaching, such as marketing for clients.

Where, or how, you choose to meet is at your discretion.  For example, a Circle may wish to meet via conference call.  Any meeting expenses incurred are the responsibility of the Circle. If you need suggestions for a location to hold your Circle, the Board has list of places we are familiar using that are free-of-charge.

When ready to invite participants, the organizer(s)contacts Julie Berg, MCA Communications Director, at Communications@minnesotacoaches.org, with the following information:

  • Name, e-mail address and phone number of the contact person for the Circle
  • The topic and a brief description of the content to be discussed
  • Date, time and place for your first Circle meeting
  • Any additional information you’d  like to add to your invitation.

Skill Topic – My Client Has My Challenges!

By Paula Hemming MA, PCC

When a client mentions struggling with time or money or confidence or trying to find love, it may be easy to think,  “Oh no, I have that problem too! How can I coach this person when I haven’t solved this myself?”

Some view this as divine comedy, that we encounter in our clients what we need to learn.  We face similar challenges in life so this is bound to happen.  It is important to remember that having solved the topic your client presents will not make you any more helpful as a coach.  The topic may distract whether you have solved it or not. The goal is to remain in your coaching perspective, not to solve this for the client.  Without this self management the coach can find him/herself trying to coach from the places that do not feel resourceful. For example, if the coach is coaching a client’s relationship goal from the failed dater inside, they will stay gloriously stuck together.  Or the client may end up offering the coach a resource.
